What You Need to Know When Believing God for a Blessing

Ever feel like you’re stuck in a waiting game with God? You’ve prayed, you’ve hoped, you’ve been believing God for a blessing – but that blessing just isn’t showing up. We’ve all been there. It’s easy to get discouraged when it seems like the heavens are silent. In today’s post, I’d like to use a personal illustration to encourage you to hold fast to your faith, remaining confident that you will indeed “see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27:13, NKJV).”

The story begins on a “regular-degular” Sunday morning. It had to be at about half past 10 a.m. I was getting ready for church and glanced at some candies on my bookshelf. I made a note to grab a handful so that I could give one to my much younger cousin, and I did so before leaving for service. When I arrived in church, I saw that she was there and had a friend with her. They came to sit next to me and spent the service there. I did not think it best to give them the candies during the service, but I did give them each a piece after church had ended. This was a simple Sunday happening, but the Lord used it to teach me a few lessons.

The lessons taught are drawn from the parallel perspective of me as a loving guardian to my younger cousin like God is a loving father to His children. (Disclaimer: This illustration is in no way meant to imply that I am in any way equal to God).

  1. God is intentional about how He blesses us and has our blessings in mind before we can even consider them ourselves. So, don’t doubt that God will surely bless you. Remember those times when He came through for you? That’s the same God you’re dealing with now. When it comes to believing God for a blessing, it all starts with trust. When you feel overlooked or forgotten, consider how He has come through in the past, and use scripture to remind yourself of His promises. God withholds no good thing from us (Psalm 84:11, NKJV), He is our good Father!
  2. God appreciates our sincere hearts. My little cousin did not come to sit with me because she knew or suspected I had the candies in my purse. She just wanted to be next to me. I believe that, in that same way, God loves when we come to Him without any hidden agenda – when all we want is just to be in His presence. If you are believing God for a blessing, take the time to talk to Him. Don’t be afraid to be open and transparent; after all, the Lord knows our hearts. He is just waiting on your act of faith.
  3. Being connected the right person brings favor. My cousin’s friend may have an idea of who I am, but she does not have same personal relationship with me. But, because she is connected to my little cousin, she received the same blessing. Because I love my little cousin so much, I wanted to show love to her friend as well. On your faith walk, it is important to ask God to reveal the divine connections assigned to bless your life. Keep in mind, though, that these connections aren’t just a means of receiving from God; you should also seek to be a wealth of resource, encouragement, and opportunity for those connected to you in a way that meets a bigger kingdom goal.
  4. God always has more than enough of what we need. Even though I intended to give my cousin only one candy, I took a handful with me. In the end, her ‘more than enough’ blessed her friend. With Jesus, you are walking around with a wealth of resources — not just for you but for those connected to your life. While we are waiting on God, let us live in a way that we bring blessings to the lives of others because we so please God. May the favor of God on our lives spill over on those connected to us.
  5. Just because God has not released the blessing yet, that does not mean He does not have great things in store for you. Although, I had the candies with me the entire service, neither of the girls received any until I though the time was fitting. I would like to encourage someone that God will not neglect to show you His favor once you remain committed to Him. In fact, you have no idea how close you are to your blessing. He has already assigned it to you and you have only to wait on His perfect timing!

In short, the blessing has been with you all along. Jesus has had everything you needed all along!

Be encouraged. 😊
